Natural Daffodil Patterns
Daffodils Get Out of Line 1. Scatter bulbs in irregular groupings. If you avoid planting bulbs in rigid square, rectangular, or circle shapes, Mother Nature herself could have been the gardener.
2. Taper plantings on either side. Plant in a random pattern, closer together in the center and fewer as you move out.
3. Select spots other than formal beds or borders for your daffodil bulbs. Plant daffodils along the edge of a forest or woodsy area, or on a hillside, making sure they will receive a few hours of sun each day. These spots are especially good for early blooms before the trees grow out the leaf canopies.
4. Draw a shape in horticultural lime to make planting easier. Or plant odd numbers of triangles across, and decrease the amount as you move out from the center in either direction
5. Place daffodil bulbs in the right spot. Daffodils will bloom for decades when planted deeply in well-drained soil with plenty of sunlight. Add a little compost to each hole.
6. Leave room for the bulbs to multiply. Don't plant bulbs close together--no closer than 6" apart so there is room for them to spread in a natural way.
