So I’ve come to the end of Vegetarian week, and all-in-all, not too bad. This weekend, and eating out, was slightly easier than I thought it would be. There were a few bumps in the road (see Saturday night, below), but I didn’t touch a bit of meat all week.
However, Dairy, Eggs, and I had our swan song this weekend. They’ve been my main source of protein this past week. More importantly, though, cheese makes everything so delicious. What did the world do before cheese? Was there a time before cheese? Yeah, none of this bodes very well for vegan week.
Editor’s (Katie) Note: Raw week has been moved up to the week after vegan week. I realized it made the most sense as I continue to limit things in my diet. Gluten-free week is tbd (although, it should be noted that raw week will also be, essentially, gluten free).
Friday
Breakfast – Green Smoothie (spinach, Greek yogurt, flax seed, banana)
Lunch – Leftover Pad Thai ala Katie
Dinner – Vegetarian Spring Rolls, Pad See Ew with Tofu (at a local Thai restaurant)
Saturday
Brunch – HUGE egg white omelet with spinach, feta cheese, and lots of garlic (homemade…I’m trying to up my omelet skills)
Afternoon Snack – Pita Chips, half of a Chocolate Chip Cookie
Dinner – Okay, so for this I have to set the scene. The boyfriend and I were downtown babysitting for his (ADORABLE) nephew, and got Chinese takeout that came highly recommended by his sister. I got the Dan Dan noodles, vegetarian style, that this place is known for, and asked for low spice (since on the menu, they’re listed as an 8/10 on the spice scale). The boyfriend got chili chicken, which was listed as a 5/10. He expected it to be a sweet chili sauce. Long story short – he took one bite of the chicken and spent the next hour (no exaggeration, I swear) with ice cubes permanently attached to his tongue. It was that hot. Needless to say, I only ate half of my delicious Dan Dan noodles, and let him have the other half, once his tongue was able to taste flavors again. Not a vegetarian-week-based story, but I thought you all would enjoy the anecdote. And the visual of me bathing a 7-month-old while his uncle stands by, icing his tongue.
Sunday
Brunch – Poached eggs and rye bread (which I turn into a bootleg version of eggs-in-a-hole) and hashbrowns at my very favorite diner. It’s a traditional diner that has been renovated, and serves mostly local, organic, ethical food, but with a typical diner menu. If you’re ever in town…
Dinner – Bruschetta and Cheese Pizza. Again, I was mourning the soon-to-be loss of cheese from my diet.
After Dinner Snack – Homemade olive oil popcorn while watching the return of Downton Abbey. None of them are vegetarians, that’s for sure.

Why an egg-white omelet? Especially since you are, forgive me, *obsessing* on protein? The yolks are where most of the protein is.
Did you know that a standard serving of broccoli contains 4 grams of protein?
Hi Sandy,
You are absolutely right. I just prefer the taste of egg whites with certain ingredients (like feta). You’ve also uncovered my dirty secret – broccoli is one of the few vegetables I cannot stand! Which is a shame, because it is so healthy.
Thanks for reading!
Katie
LOL – well, I can’t argue with personal taste, can I? And I am enjoying your experiment.
