Does a meatless Labor Day sound like torture to you? Watching everyone’s sizzling burgers and brats smoke on the grill, while you’re stuck with pasta salad? Well stop eating the pasta salad, and follow me as a I show you the meatless way to have a flavorful labor day!
First, we need to change the way you think about a burger. Because we think of it as a “burger,” we think that without meat, it’s pointless. Instead, start thinking of a burger as what it is – just another sandwich. So today, you’re going to make yourself a delicious sandwich, and leave the artery clogging to the next guy.
So let’s head over to the burger fixings table. The great thing about no meat is that you don’t have to wait for the slow poke who’s manning the grill! You also don’t have to shove six-year-olds out of your way each time a new plate of burgers and hot dogs comes out (just me?). Grab yourself a bun, and load it up the same way you would your burger grilled patty sandwich. Refrain from using any ketchup, but pile on the lettuce, tomatoes, onions, cheese, and whatever else you like.
Now head over to the side dishes. Some great vegetables with meaty textures are beans, eggplants, and zucchini; if there are any of those on the table, add them to your sandwich!
Last, but not least, the salad section. Add a little dressing to your sandwich. Personally, I think balsamic vinegar would taste great, but use whatever you like. I’m as much of a ketchup fiend as the next guy, but when you’ve got such great veggies, ketchup just covers up their flavor.
Time to eat! The great thing about going meatless at barbecues is that you can indulge in all of the great side dishes that, when you think about it, are really the stars of the show anyway.
Have a great Labor Day everyone! And please, tell me about your favorite labor day recipe in the comments below!
